The ash then dissolved and remineralized, covering the trilobites quickly and preserving them in remarkable detail. This preservation process, studied by geologist Robert Gaines, has been observed in other ancient fossils as well.

The newfound fossils provide valuable insights into trilobite biology and evolution. For example, they confirm that trilobites used their legs to chew food along a central groove leading to a tiny mouth. Unlike other arthropods, trilobites did not have specialized limbs for different tasks, which may have contributed to their extinction.
